Armchair Traveler: Cambodia Rising 12/2 @ 7p

Just as the world began to shut down due to COVID, Girdwood locals Jeff & Sharon Samuels were in Cambodia as part of a year long round-the-world adventure. Jeff will share photos and stories of he and Sharon’s visit. From the capital of Phnom Penh to the villages of the Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake to the splendor of Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples, Cambodia has a wealth of culture and history to see and experience.

This free presentation is part of FVCS’s “Armchair Traveler” series, and made possible by a generous donation from our sponsors, longtime local Girdwoodians Sherry & Bob Dugan.

FVCS 40th Anniversary Online Auction 12/1-15

HELP US CELEBRATE 40!

Forty years ago Four Valley Community School began as an idea to build community and offer opportunities locally for residents of greater Girdwood.

Despite present day challenges, we plan on serving our community for now and forever, and are celebrating our 40th year with an Arts Auction Fundraiser.  All proceeds will go to support our programs, events, and classes and to keep them available locally.

Local artists and crafters of all ages have come together to create pieces in support of our anniversary, and it is a perfect time to shop for the holidays or for yourself.

Go to the Online Auction Site and log-in, bid it up, and celebrate 40 with us!

Thank You Pick.Click.Give Donors 2020

This year 78 Girdwood locals donated to Four Valleys Community School via the Pick.Click.Give program. Please consider donating part of your Permanent Dividend Fund to FVCS with this easy to use program. Simply designate FVCS when you file for your 2021 PFD starting in January, and join the list of locals who support FVCS. Donated funds are used to support our community education programs, classes and events. Thank you!

Tales of Winter Caretaking in the AK Bush

Social distancing got you down? Come share an isolation experience together. Join us via Zoom to see photos and hear stories of Jen and Mike getting their winter feet wet caretaking for remote Alaska lodges, from Bristol Bay to the Arctic. Hear what it is like to live and work in remote Alaskan bush locations, where daily life included shoveling snow off of roofs, filling wood sheds, reporting weather, and, perhaps most importantly, taking care of and entertaining themselves, miles away from neighbors, stores, and medical help.

This free presentation is part of FVCS’s “Armchair Travels” series, and made possible by a generous donation from our sponsors Sherry & Bob Dugan.

Register ahead to receive the Zoom link the day of the presentation.

FVCS Board of Directors 2020-21

Our volunteer leadership represents the greater Girdwood community with the depth of local knowledge and the skills needed to oversee Four Valleys Community School. As an entity, the board has all the legal duties of a nonprofit board and is responsible for setting policies, overseeing staff, developing program and awarding scholarships.

Members serve two-year terms on various committees and hold specific board positions. New board members are selected by the current board and elected to serve specific board positions.

Welcome to new members, and welcome back to returning members. Thank you for your work to bring community education to the greater Girdwood area via Four Valleys Community School!

FVCS Annual Ski & Sports Swap Virtual All October!

BACKGROUND: Since Four Valleys Community School cannot hold an in-person Ski & Sports Swap this year (thanks, Covid!), we are going VIRTUAL! This will be a no host self-supported swap; we ask that sellers donate anywhere from 20-100% of your sales to back FVCS.

HOW DOES THIS WORK? Join our FVCS Girdwood Ski & Sports Swap Facebook page, and during the entire month of October post your gear to SELL. You can also post gear that you are looking to BUY to see if anyone in our community has the sizes and type of gear you seek. You make the connection, close the deal, host the transaction, and then make a donation back to FVCS. We suggest between 20-100% of the gear price. Your donations will be on an honor system, and we appreciate any support. We will be using the GiveButter platform to accept your donations, but you can also do it the old fashioned way and send us a check to PO Box 790, Girdwood, AK 99587.

SPEAKING OF DONATIONS: We know we are not the lone ranger, but this has been a really tough year for Four Valleys Community School. In our 40th year of providing community education to the greater Girdwood community we were forced to shut down for 4 months. As winter darkness closes in on the Girdwood valley, the role of FVCS is very important to the social, mental and physical health of this community.  We are proud to be a legacy non-profit with the community of Girdwood being the very DNA that created us, and we plan on serving Girdwood for now and forever, despite present day challenges.  Your donations allow us to continue to show up for Girdwood, offering classes, programs and events for all ages. Thank you very much for the support of our program. Please consider a donation of between 20-100% of your gear sales, recycle gear back into our community, support FVCS programs, and share the stoke. You can also just plain old donate some funds to us too. Every dime will be used to bring more programs, classes and events to Girdwood. Thank you ALL.

FVCS Fall Program Update

First, a heartfelt thank you to all Girdwood, Bird, Indian and Portage residents for your support of Four Valleys Community School. We have been serving our community for 40 years, and look forward to many more. Like all of you, we have been severely impacted by Covid, but we are not going to let it get in the way of providing recreational, educational and cultural activities for our community. This fall we will offer programs both online and in person for people of all ages, and we need your help to make it happen.

What’s Next for FVCS: Now that the weather has changed, and we are solidly into cooler and very wet rainforest conditions, we hope to begin to offer small group indoor programs in addition to online programing. When and IF school begins in mid-October, we will offer small group gym-based opportunities from the Girdwood K-8 School. We will also use additional buildings and locations such as the Girdwood Chapel, Challenge Alaska, and Meadows Community Center (Our Lady of the Snows) to run programs. We are working to develop programs now. Here is where we need your help (see below)!

Volunteer and Paid Instructors Wanted: As it gets darker and colder, we are concerned about the social, mental and physical health of our community. Connection during times of social distancing is especially important. You can help serve the greater good of Girdwood by sharing your time and talent with others. Do you have an idea for a class that you could offer?  Do you have a skill, talent or interest to share? We are looking for online and small in-person programs that are of local interest and reflect the unique lifestyle of our community. It might be a simple Halloween craft for kids, or a complex cooking project. Pumpkin carving? Slideshow of a great trip or cool experience you could share? Healthy living? Ski conditioning? Garden winterizing tips? Let us know your area of interest, and FVCS staff will help you pull a class offering together. Please email cmcdermott@fourvalleys.org with your idea. Let’s make this happen for our community!
